Psychology Students Explore Mental Health Initiatives with IASISMED NGO
Students from the Psychology Department recently had the opportunity to engage with IASISMED NGO and learn about its impactful initiatives supporting mental health in Greece. The session also introduced students to ways they can get involved, including volunteering and internship programmes. Ms Angeliki Chrysostomidou, Day Centre Coordinator at Iasis At Work and Psychologist, and Ms Artemis Stefanidou, Psychologist and Volunteer Coordinator at Connect Thessaloniki, delivered an informative and engaging session that inspired students to consider meaningful ways to apply their skills in the community. Adding an industry perspective, Dr Giovanni Serafini, Associate Professor in Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour at our Business Administration & Economics Department, shared valuable insights on career opportunities for psychology graduates, particularly in the field of human resource management. The event was organised collaboratively by the Career, Employability and Enterprise Centre and the Psychology Department, demonstrating the University’s commitment to connecting academic learning with practical experience and career development.

Educational Visit to Alzheimer’s Care Facility Offers Valuable Insight for Psychology Postgraduates
As part of their experiential learning, Dr. Kalliopi Megari, Academic Director of the Clinical Psychology postgraduate programme at CITY College, University of York Europe Campus, led a group of students from the Clinical Psychology and Counselling & Psychotherapy programmes on a meaningful educational visit. The students had the opportunity to meet with Professor Magdalini Tsolaki, a renowned Neurologist-Psychiatrist,Theologist, Professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and President of the President of the Panhellenic Federation of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders, during their visit to the specialised care facility for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, “Panagia Glikofilousa,” as well as the Educational and Cultural Institution “Saint Gregory Palamas.” This unique opportunity allowed students to gain first-hand experience of the clinical setting and deepen their understanding of the complex needs of individuals living with dementia. They also observed the invaluable role played by dedicated professionals who provide care with compassion, sensitivity, and professionalism on a daily basis. Such visits are an integral part of our hands-on teaching philosophy, bridging academic knowledge with real-world application in mental health and clinical practice.

Our Psychology students dive into the world of illusions at Thessaloniki's Museum of Illusions
First-year Psychology students recently ventured into the captivating realm of optical illusions during their visit at the Thessaloniki's Museum of Illusions, accompanied by PhD candidate and Lecturer Nena Evgeniadou. Students delved into the mechanics of how the brain processes and interprets sensory information—an essential topic in their studies. The museum’s immersive exhibits and activities allowed students to see firsthand how illusions can trick the brain, offering a unique opportunity to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world phenomena. This experience not only enhanced students’ understanding of perception but also showcased the power of engaging, hands-on learning in a fun and stimulating environment.

Our Psychology Department offers Drug Prevention Workshop to high school students in collaboration with the Municipality of Thessaloniki
The Psychology Department of CITY College, University of York Europe Campus in collaboration with the Municipality of Thessaloniki organised a Drug Prevention Workshop for students from all the high schools of the municipality. The event was led by Dr Aristea Ladas and took place successfully on Wednesday 5th February 2025 at the Thessaloniki City Hall. Dr Aristea Ladas, Dr Stella Karapa and Dr Kalliopi Megari The workshop featured presentations by Dr. Aristea Ladas, Assistant Professor, and Dr. Kalliopi Megari, Academic Director of MSc in Clinical Psychology, from the Psychology Department of CITY College, as well as from an external scientific collaborator Dr. Stella Karapa, Psychologist-Child Psychologist. A group of dedicated psychology students volunteered their time and skills to assist in facilitating the workshop's activities. The event aimed at increasing students’ awareness of the dangers and consequences of drug abuse and providing accurate information about different types of drugs, and their effects, as well as helping students develop critical thinking and decision-making skills and empowering them to make informed, responsible choices regarding drug use. Participating students engaged in experiential learning activities designed to educate them about both legal and illegal psychoactive substances that are commonly misused. A key aspect of the workshop involved co-creating behavioural protocols, to aid the student ambassadors in managing several drug-related scenarios that they may face in their life. The workshop was designed in the context of "training the trainers", with the aim of equipping participants with the appropriate tools to train themselves and the next ambassadors, ensuring the programme’s sustainability. The accompanying teachers also enhanced the collaborative atmosphere of the workshops, as they contributed their valuable insights. Participants showed keen enthusiasm throughout all the activities and regarded the workshop as exceptionally informative and impactful.

Company visit at ThPA S.A. - Port of Thessaloniki by our Business Students
More Than A Port: Student Visit to the multi-gateway intermodal network and logistics solutions provider for the Balkans and the broader Southeast, Central and Eastern European region. During this visit to the Port of Thessaloniki, students will have the opportunity to learn how ThPA S.A. brings its regional supply chain to a new era by providing connectivity that facilitates business growth, fostering economic and social added value and respecting the mandate for a “green” future for our planet and the younger generations. Exploring the present and the future of the Port by a virtual tour via the modern 3D interactive model of ThPA S.A. students will experience how a major port operates and integrates into complex supply chain networks.

Dr Ladas at the annual conference of The International Society of Substance Use Professionals (ISSUP)
Dr. Aristea Ladas, Assistant Professor of the Psychology Department of CITY College, University of York Europe Campus and Professional member of ISSUP, presented her work on "Differences between addicted and recreational users: Is it in the reward system after all?" at the annual conference of the International Society of Substance Use Professionals (ISSUP) in Thessaloniki, 24-28 June. The study investigated disparities in the reward system between 213 recreational and addicted polydrug users, to see whether there is something in the reward system that differentiates them. It was found that individuals who are more sensitive to rewards are more susceptible to abusing drugs rather than using them recreationally. These findings have the potential to enhance our understanding of current approaches to drug addiction prevention and rehabilitation. A second successful 'Free Memory Test Day' by CITY College, Alzheimer Hellas and the YMCA
A great opportunity for our student volunteers from the postgraduate programmes in Cognitive Neuropsychology and Clinical Neuropsychology of CITY College who participated in the activity to put their knowledge into practice, as well as offer to the community. The Free Memory Test Day organised by CITY College, University of York Europe Campus, the Hellenic Society of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders (Alzheimer Hellas) and YMCA was held - for a second time this year - with great success on Wednesday, 18 September 2024 at the premises of YMCA in Thessaloniki. People above 60 years old had the opportunity to do a free preventive memory test and receive the results and corresponding instructions. The supervision of the event was undertaken by Ms Georgia Papaioannou, Lecturer in Neuropsychology at the Department of Psychology of CITY College and Ms Magda Ouzouni, Ms Despoina Liapi and Ms Christina Tzalavara, Psychologists at Alzheimer Hellas. A group of student volunteers from the postgraduate programmes in Cognitive Neuropsychology and Clinical Neuropsychology of CITY College also participated in the activity and had the chance to put their knowledge into practice as well as offer to the community. The event was attended by Dr Madga Tsolaki, Neurologist-Psychiatrist-Theologist Professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and President of the President of the Panhellenic Federation of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders, Ms Aristi Tzoni, Directorate for Action and Social Offer of YMCA as well as other representatives of the three organising bodies. Following the success of the first event in earlier in March, the second Free Memory Test Day took place in the context of the social responsibility action of CITY College, Alzheimer Hellas and YMCA with the aim of promoting the prevention of dementia and Alzheimer's disease, as well as informing the public and raising awareness. The following event will take place in Thessaloniki, in Greek Τετάρτη, 18 Σεπτεμβρίου 2024 9:00-14:00 | Ιστορικό κτήριο Χ.Α.Ν.Θ. | Θεσσαλονίκη Το CITY College, University of York Europe Campus, η Ελληνική Εταιρεία Νόσου Alzheimer και Συγγενών Διαταραχών (Alzheimer Ελλάς) και η Χ.Α.Ν.Θ. διοργανώνουν Ημέρα Δωρεάν Εξέτασης Μνήμης με αφορμή την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Νόσου Alzheimer, που είναι η 21η Σεπτεμβρίου. Ποιος μπορεί να συμμετέχει Οι ενδιαφερόμενοι (άνω των 60 ετών) θα έχουν τη δυνατότητα να κάνουν δωρεάν προληπτικό έλεγχο μνήμης με τη χρήση κατάλληλων ειδικών τεστ. Οι συμμετέχοντες θα ενημερώνονται επιτόπου σχετικά με την αξιολόγηση του τεστ και θα τους δίνονται οι αντίστοιχες οδηγίες. Δεν απαιτείται η κράτηση θέσης. Τα τεστ θα διενεργούνται στις εγκαταστάσεις της Χ.Α.Ν.Θ. με σειρά προτεραιότητας κατα την προσέλευση. Διάρκεια εξέτασης Τα τεστ θα διαρκούν 10-15 λεπτά και θα γίνονται με μορφή ερωταπαντήσεων.
