FAQs for CITY College / University of Sheffield students

1. Why have the University of Sheffield and CITY College decided to end their relationship?

After 27 years of working together we wish to develop our strategies for development and growth in new directions. We remain proud of the work we have done together and will maintain our close relationship during the teach-out period until 2024.

2. How will this decision affect me?

All current students will be unaffected by the changing situation and you will be able to complete your studies in order to receive your University of Sheffield degree. 

3. When is the relationship with Sheffield due to end?

The relationship will come to an end in 2024.

4. Will I be able to complete my Sheffield degree?

Yes. All students currently registered will have sufficient time in order to complete their studies by 2024.

5. What will happen if I need to suspend my studies for a period of time?

While we expect all students to complete their studies according to the official timeframe for their course, we recognise that there needs to be some flexibility in our arrangements with Sheffield. If you need to suspend your studies for a semester or a full year, or you are required to resit any courses, then your case will be considered on an individual basis to ensure that you are able to receive the appropriate qualification.

6. Which university will be CITY’s new partner?

CITY College is starting a close relationship with the University if York and we will be the ‘University of York Europe Campus’. The University of York is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of leading UK universities and consistently ranks amongst the very best universities in the UK and the world. Until 2024, CITY College will work with both Universities.

7. Can I transfer to study for a York degree?

You will be expected to complete your studies on the University of Sheffield programme and to receive your degree from the University of Sheffield.

8. Will I be able to attend a graduation ceremony?

Yes. All students are invited to attend the relevant graduation ceremonies which are held annually in Sheffield.

9. Will my degree course change in any way?

No. All courses are subject to some change to reflect new ideas, new concepts and the changing world in which we live. However, there will be no changes made to your courses as a result of the decision to end our relationship.

10. Will my lecturers change?

No. There will be no change to the teaching or administrative staff at CITY College as a result of the decision to end our relationship.

11. I am a PhD student, will there be any change to my supervisory arrangements?

No. You will continue to be registered with your Sheffield academic department and there will be no change to your circumstances as a result of the ending of the relationship. PhD students will be permitted to continue their studies beyond 2024 in accordance with existing time-limit regulations.

12. Will I still be able to access Sheffield library resources?

Yes. The University is committed to ensuring that all resources it provides to students undertaking Sheffield programmes will continue to be available until 2024.

13. Who can I speak to if I have any further concerns about the situation?

If you would like to speak to a member of staff about any concerns you may have, please contact your Head of Department or your Academic Director.

14. Will I still be a University of Sheffield International Faculty student?

Yes. Your status as a University of Sheffield International Faculty student will remain unchanged.

15. What will it say on my transcript and degree certificate?

There will be no change to the degree certificates and transcripts for Sheffield awards. Please see this link.

16. Will I be a University of Sheffield alumnus when I graduate?

Yes. The University of Sheffield will be your alma mater and you will be an important part of a worldwide alumni family that spans 180 countries.
